EAME CONSUMER & RETAIL VIDEO
Content development, concept, script, art direction, interview, cinematography & production

Norman-Hulzink produced and filmed 6 video's for an internal IFF board meeting, working with consumer insights from the internal research team to present opportunities and economical growth of the EAME regions.

To portray the cultural diversity of this large region the narrative followed a day in the life of an average consumer in Russia, South Africa & Germany, showing daily routines from household chores to food preparation and local area retail situations.

After digesting the gathered research and distilling it to the essentials per country, we devised the interview and script to bring these facts and the key consumer to life in a warm, informal, optimistic and engaging atmosphere.

The final edit of the videos are overlaid with illustrated infographics to support the facts and conclusion of the confidential research results.

HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates
Magazine

HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates (a leader in hospitality interior design worldwide) Singapore office asked Norman-Hulzink to design a magazine as a special format to present their concept for an art focussed hotel, Le Meridien, in Shanghai. The concept looked at new perspectives based on the French and Chinese history of the location documented through art and photography. With themes like local shadow plays, pin hole cameras, light travel, projection and reflection. The large format thick magazine introduces the mood and atmosphere.

SKETCHES CREATIVITY CHALLENGE
Campaign – concept, design & production

Norman-Hulzink developed a campaign strategy and visual identity for IFF's Sketches Creativity Challenge, a perfumery competition initiated by the Fragrance Ingredients marketing department. The competition's aim is to foster creativity and give young talents a chance to exhibit their capabilities.

The students were asked to make an olfactive ‘sketch’ using only the twelve IFF Fragrance Ingredients and encouraged that a sketch is not necessarily a finished product, but is an expression of an idea, loose, quick and free. This freedom to create together with the restricted pallet led to some innovative and surprising uses of the ingredients and of course creates a familiarity and relationship with IFF.

50 students were chosen from 3 international perfumery schools, the Fashion Institute of Technology (New York), ISIPCA (Versailles), and the IFF Perfumery School. Each was sent a wrapped kit containing 12 ingredients plus an empty for returning their formula, a fold out explaining the competition guidelines and list of the ingredients qualities and olfactory description and return form.

The jury selected 6 finalists which were exhibited during the World Perfumery Congress 2014 (WPC) in Deauville, France.

KNOWLEDGE CENTER – MICROSOFT SHAREPOINT
Strategy, design, editorial plan

The IFF Knowledge Center, is an internal online learning centre for the global employees of the Fragrance department. It provides learning documents, consumer insights, trend reports and shares project information.

Norman-Hulzink was asked initially make something engaging to feature on the homepage to get staff more active and encourage use. We objectively assessed the question and concluded that in fact it was something else that was needed. The site was difficult to navigate and the existing content was hidden, and most importantly it was cold and text based missing a human side to engage with.

We instead proposed that we redesign the existing site, elements and imagery, to improve access to the documents and create hierarchy. It was important that the new design could be implemented within the capabilities of both Microsoft Sharepoint and the internal IT team.

We also developed a 6 month editorial plan steering the content to be pushed with interviews linking the specializations of employees around the world to subjects and documents available on the site.

We directed a documentary photographic style and a conversational tone of voice to the interviews. This allows the staff to peek into the daily working environments of their colleagues and discover the articles in a personable way, making the content tangible and engaging, and also enabling them to comment and interact.

ERRISLANNAN MANOR RIDING CENTRE & GARDENS
Signage

Errislannan Manor is situated on a peninsula on the west coast of Ireland sheltered by a surrounding wood overlooking a trout lake, bounded by Connemara's moors and mountains. It is a long established riding centre for locals and summer tourists and Connemara pony stud and the home of the Connemara Branch of the Irish Pony Club. It's also a member of the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland Irish gardens for charity scheme. We were commissioned to create a way finding system to better direct visitors. Including redrawing the logo featuring the Marley horse statues found on the tops of the entrance gates.

MUSEUM VAN LOON – SUSPENDED HISTORIES
Contemporary Art Exhibition
Identity, communication items, catalogue – concept & design

We were asked to design the identity, catalogue and communication material for the contemporary art exhibition Suspended Histories at the Museum Van Loon.

The exhibition looks at the relationship between the Van Loon family and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the 17th and 18th centuries. Philippa van Loon invited the guest curator Dr Thomas J. Berghuis, a researcher and specialist on Asian art and curator of Chinese art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York:

“This exhibition is neither located in the past or in the present, nor in the future of art and art history. Rather it is located in the presence of contemporary art by making its significant contribution to reactivate the Suspended Histories found in Museum Van Loon.”

The title alludes to the dynamic processes of history. History is never finished, but is continually postponed, or ‘suspended’, in time and in space. It is constantly being analysed, judged and adjusted. The 11 artists, who are strongly related to the regions of the former colonies, were asked to explore in which ways history lives on and how it can be visualized in relation to the museum and to their own existence and background.

Identity, communication items, catalogue – concept & design

Inspired by the theme of the exhibition we visited the Scheepvaartmuseum archives to view the Van Loon family atlas, by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, the Dutch publishers and official cartographers of the VOC.

Maps allow you to travel in your mind, not only in the present but also into the past. A map shows a moment in time but it is never final, it is always changing. It allows you to navigate the world, it represents and exposes connections and personal histories belonging to your own past.

Identity, communication items, catalogue – concept & design

The fundamental grid underlying the layout of the catalogue and all the communication items are based on the Mercator projection and rhumb lines applied in the atlas, which were uniquely suited to marine navigation, using the area, or part of, that the VOC would have sailed from the Netherlands to Asia. For example when the book lays open, the page spread matches the mapped area, with the Netherlands in top left corner and Asia in the lower right area. The colours are inspired by the hand colouring of the atlas and the interior of the house itself.

HILDE KOENDERS – DESIGNER
Custom drawn font and logo, identity, stationery, website, print portfolio

Inspired by Hilde's work, we looked at the hand cut lettering familiar to old dutch factories and ship yards, as it is crafted, unique and playful. We developed a refined, precise yet individual display font, named Ridder, with accompanying ornamental elements. Together with templates for printed items and website, we could hand over an identity toolkit for her to implement in her own projects.

IFF INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES
Exhibition – concept & design

IFF is a leading global creator of flavours and fragrances used in a wide variety of consumer products. Since the 19th century, IFF and its predecessor companies have worked closely with the world’s foremost brands in developing the scents and tastes for products that have become household names.

We were asked to research, design and produce a permanent exhibition of the company’s history for the entrance hall of the EAME Creative Centre in Hilversum, The Netherlands.

The exhibition is a showcase to clients and visitors. By sharing it’s heritage and Dutch origin, IFF would like to inspire her employees to take pride in being part of the organization.

Our concept uses innovation as the common theme throughout. The timeline highlights ground-breaking product inventions and technologies, influential events and visionary pioneers.

IFF INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES
Exhibition – concept & design

The installation comprises four large wall-mounted panels with embedded, interactive tablets displaying an extended digital timeline. The screens allow the viewer to dig deeper and reveal the people, stories, challenges and innovations. Accompanying the wall exhibition is a printed brochure sharing a concise version of the timeline.

The design concept is inspired by the hexagonal structure of chemical compounds. These are the basic building blocks which IFF use to create both flavours and fragrance. The hexagon became the fundamental grid to construct the timeline – from the custom made numerical typeface to the shape of frames and thematic icons. These hexagonal connections link the key facts and highlight the company’s pioneers.

The colour spectrum is a common language used in IFF to describe both flavours and fragrances. Inspired by this, we have used the colour spectrum to navigate from one decade to the next along the wall integrating the lighting and the tablets.

We carefully selected more than 1000 images from the recent and historical archive and centralized this in the design. The photographs communicate the rich heritage and reflect the familiar activities of each decade.

The exhibition interprets the extensive history of IFF, encouraging interaction making it both accessible and alive for the visitor.

PEEP SHOW 2 – GALLERY
Exhibition

The Peep Show's are a series of temporary moments for selected artists to expose their work curated by Norman-Hulzink. This time it was ‘Hyperlinks and the subject of landscape’ by Georgina I’Anson.

“There are two ideas discussed in the space, ideas that Georgina believes will be part of our future. Spaces will be empty, there will be no tension between surfaces, objects and tools will only exist in the moment you have need of them. With an infinite reflection on nature those objects will grow one from another.”

Also we got together with our lovely new neighbours for Peep Show Warm Up at Koko Coffee & Design on Oudezijds Achterburgwal 145. Showing a selection of seen and unseen work from our previous Peep Show artists Rop van Mierlo, Denise Nestor and Frank Rettenbacher.

TRANSNATURAL FESTIVAL 2012 – LUCY MCRAE
Campaign video (illustrations and design support)

Lucy McRae asked us to collaborate with her on a short video campaign, commissioned by Transnatural Festival at NEMO in Amsterdam. The idea was to build an imperfect machine, referencing the theme ‘State of Autonomy’, exploring whether more balance can exist between man made technology and nature. Moving mirrors are used to output infinite imagery, creating a self generating system which the viewer peers into. The illustrations were the blueprints and instructions onto which the machine parts were built.

LUCY MCRAE — ARTIST
Brand consulting, logo, identity, stationery & website

Lucy McRae is an Australian artist who’s work extends to the worlds of fashion, technology and the body. Lucy’s work is confronting, experimental and at times grotesque. This is in contrast to her sophisticated and professional output ranging from costumes, photography and video.

To us Lucy’s work has something of an atmosphere between a freak show and Chanel. With hints of this playful yet elegant world, the identity supports this. The logo was deconstructed and reconstructed using the typeface Didot as the base. The rest of the typography is used in a sophisticated and playful manner. The paper sizes used refer to older more elegant formats of the past inspired by great grandmothers writing set and an old prescriptions wallet found in an eclectic little shop in Paris.

MR EGGS CASINO VENICE BIENNALE 2009
Concept, research, storytelling, event, design, production invite, set of notices, paper dresses, storybook

Peering into the gardens tucked away behind the alleyways and streets of Venice, we discovered many stories and tales. In a garden close to the entrance of the Biennale, we initiated and produced an event to create a moment to pass them on.

When flying over Venice, the city seems to be filled with many green areas but while on foot these places seem to vanish. We wanted to see where they had gone.

By ringing doorbells and talking to locals we were eventually lead into the gardens. We met various characters along the way including nuns, a cat, a squid with ladies eyes, some skeleton waiters in a haunted garden, secret meetings of lovers, poets, writers, artists, an Armenian priest and a local historian. Inspired by their stories, we became curious to uncover another layer of the hidden history of Venice.

These stories have become faded and obscured from public attention just as the walled gardens were hidden from view. By sharing them we want to trigger the imagination and inspire others to discover their own.

Our soiree began with five blank paper dresses dining in the garden, whispering the stories of the past. These dresses were blank canvases that encouraged guests to take part in a new tale.

HELENA RUBINSTEIN L’ÓREAL SHANGHAI
Monthly campaign: magazine, special gifts on special days, product launch event, gift packaging & city trip

We worked with Helena Rubinstein cosmetics to create awareness and position the brand which was new to the Chinese market. We proposed a monthly campaign to approach respected journalists from the top Chinese glossy magazines to write about and influence the target audience.

Through research we discovered that the Chinese female market had a link to both the attitude and values of the founder Helena Rubinstein. These women are career driven with a spending power for luxuries.

Helena Rubinstein was herself a pioneering business woman, a self made millionairess, she established her self as one of the worlds richest women with an international enterprise. She was also quite a character with her bold statements “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones” and lifestyle; throwing lavish parties, her vast collection of jewellery and visionary view on art where she commissioned the likes of Salavador Dali to design the interior of her New York penthouse as well as perfume bottles and some countless portraits.

We introduced the brand through her character and heritage. Each part of the campaign encapsulated her character, through story telling, choice of content and atmosphere.
